Description
Among the holm oaks and downy oaks on the southern slope of the Goceano mountain range, the village of Anela stands out as one of the smallest yet oldest and most industrious centers of the area. In the Middle Ages, it was even the capital of the curatoria. Its one thousand hectares of state-owned forest are a stunning natural treasure, a popular destination for tourists in the warm season, and home to a forestry station with a helicopter base.
Dedicated areas feature fountains with fresh spring water, barbecue facilities, and comfortable wooden picnic tables shaded by majestic maple, chestnut, holly, pine, and fir trees.
Along the path leading to the 1,157-meter-high Punta Masiénnera, the second-highest peak of the range, visitors can find an equipped campsite immersed in nature.
For those passionate about antiquity, must-sees include the Sos Furrighesos necropolis of domus de janas and several nuraghi, notably Siccadores and Urchinele. A fascinating trace of Roman presence in the 1st century is the bronze military discharge diploma of the legionary Ursario, now housed in the Museo Sanna in Sassari.
The fertile lowland pastures support livestock farming and the production of excellent cheeses. In fact, the local social dairy is a key reference point for breeders across the territory.
