Description
When you say Bonnanaro, you say cherries—a variety so unique it's renowned across Sardinia and now recognized internationally. Every June, an important cherry festival draws thousands of visitors.
The name Bonnanaro also identifies a prehistoric culture from the second millennium BC, first discovered in the Corona Moltana necropolis at the end of the 19th century.
The village stretches along the eastern slope of Monte Pelau, a vast volcanic ridge. At the heart of the historic center stands the San Giorgio parish church, built in the 16th century and flanked by a tall bell tower.
On the conical peak of Monte Arana rises the rural church dedicated to Madonna delle Grazie. Other countryside sanctuaries include Santa Maria Iscalas and San Basilio Magno.
Traces of Roman settlement are visible at the Sas Turres archaeological site, which also features the Malis nuraghe near a spring of the same name. Archeological and natural trails can be explored on horseback, thanks to a well-established riding center.
The surrounding countryside produces excellent quality wines.
Bonnanaro is also the birthplace of Giuseppe Raga, one of the most famous vernacular poets in the Sardinian Logudorese language. A prestigious poetry competition is held in his honor.
