Description

The 13th-century San Pietro di Sorres sanctuary is one of the most precious and fascinating examples of Romanesque architecture in Sardinia. Located near the southern summit of Monte Pelao, the former cathedral is now part of a Benedictine abbey, which hosts an important book restoration lab, a well-stocked library, and an archaeological museum.

Each year, Borutta hosts an exciting historical reenactment called the “Bastida di Sorres,” drawing tourists and visitors alike. The abbey is an ideal place to enjoy peaceful, restorative moments. Visitors can stay overnight in the dedicated guest quarters, which include breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Just a few hundred meters downhill, the village of Borutta stretches along its main road, from which cobblestone alleys branch off, each with its original Sardinian names. Traditional craftsmanship is still alive here, particularly leatherworking.

The town is said to be named after a cave—Ulàri (from the Sardinian guruta)—which is home to one of the largest bat colonies in Sardinia. Archaeological remains found in the cave have been attributed to the Ozieri Culture.
