Description

If the name Goceano originates from a mysterious Gothic people who settled in the area during the Middle Ages, then the ancient village of Gocille or Gotille, now known as Bottidda, may still echo that distant heritage.

Both the historical and natural settings here are of rare beauty. Towering above the traditional homes of the historic center is the bell tower of the Madonna del Rosario parish church, a splendid example of neoclassical architecture. Inside, a statue of the crucified Christ is preserved.

All around, lush hills unfold with forests of downy oaks, holm oaks, and chestnut trees, providing shelter to wildlife. The fern-covered undergrowth is crossed by perennial springs. The Sa Corona nuraghe dominates the landscape from the promontory of the same name. Just below, near the s’Orculana nuraghe, stands a rare ancient wild olive tree.

Two former monasteries bear witness to Bottidda's importance in medieval times: the Franciscan convent of Monte Rasu, founded in the early 13th century and renovated in the early 1900s, and another located near the Santa Maria degli Angeli church.

Sheep farming, feed production, trade, and craftsmanship form the backbone of a local economy that remains firmly tied to tradition. Meanwhile, restaurants and farm stays offer a taste of local culinary excellence, such as cured meats and the traditional fresa bread.
