Description
Perched on the eastern slope of Monte Cuccuruddu, Cheremule enjoys a privileged panoramic position, surrounded by lush vegetation. Around the late Gothic San Gabriele Arcangelo church, the welcoming historic center seems to preserve the atmosphere of another era, inviting visitors to slow down and explore.
From the volcanic ridge surrounding the village, a lightweight lava stone similar to pumice is extracted, ideal for thermal insulation in construction. The pine forest above the town offers trekking trails and picnic areas, while the nearby Su Tippiri woodland, a wildlife protection oasis, features a dense mix of holm oaks, downy oaks, and Mediterranean scrub.
The area is rich in archaeological evidence. Among the domus de janas, the Museddu complex stands out with its eighteen hypogean tombs, renowned for their mysterious petroglyphs—anthropomorphic engravings unique in Sardinia.
Also of great significance is the discovery in this area of hominid remains dating back approximately 300,000 years.
