Description
Set in a wide and fertile agricultural valley, Cossoine is surrounded by basalt peaks of volcanic origin that, in places, resemble wild west landscapes. Perched on one of these ridges, the village has a historic center with an old-world charm, complemented by modern facilities.
You’ll find a well-stocked municipal library, beautifully kept public gardens, sports fields, and even an open-air theater. Stunning murals showcase the area’s pagan and religious traditions, while the bell tower of Santa Chiara parish church features Late Gothic spires that harmonize with the Romanesque architecture. The San Sebastiano church is where locals gather every year to celebrate the traditional Ardia on horseback.
Much older and built of uncut white stone, the rural Sancta Maria Iscalas sanctuary exhibits a distinct Byzantine style. It stands on the slopes of Monte Traessu, a basalt massif dotted with gorges and cliffs, now a refuge for local wildlife.
The territory is rich in archaeological treasures, including numerous domus de janas. Among the most important is the Corruoe site, which preserves the remains of a nuragic village and a Roman villa. In this area once stood the Castrum Lucentinum and the settlement of Kourin.
The landscape is also marked by deep natural chasms, such as the Suiles, Peltusu, and Mammuscone sinkholes—geological phenomena rare in Sardinia, steeped in local legend.
