Description
Illorai is the first village you encounter along the Goceano mountain range after crossing into the region from Marghine. The area is known for its lush vegetation and majestic forests of holm oaks and oak trees, which are among the village’s greatest assets. Among them, the Sa Melabrina downy oak stands out—considered one of the oldest trees in Europe.
During the warmer months, the Iscuvudè municipal park is a popular destination. Visitors can enjoy various recreational areas, and with permission from the municipality, it's possible to camp there. The site offers fountains, wooden benches, and covered cooking areas for outdoor meals. Children can have fun in the Mannurri playground, while adults can take advantage of sports facilities for soccer, tennis, and clay pigeon shooting.
In addition to numerous nuraghi, the area also features the Molia domus de janas, painted in red ochre—an important element of the local archaeological heritage. Not far away is the well-preserved three-arched Roman bridge over the Tirso River, known as Pont’ezzu.
From the ancient Augustinian convent, the wooden statues of Sant'Agostino and San Nicolò da Tolentino were preserved and are now housed in the San Gavino parish church, along with other precious silver liturgical items. Another natural gem is found at Sos Banzos, where healing mineral springs are traditionally used for the treatment of rheumatic pain.
