Description

Once the stronghold of the renowned Genoese Doria family, Monteleone Rocca Doria stands atop a striking hill, where a small medieval village now offers stunning views over Lake Temo and the surrounding countryside, framed by cork oak, holm oak, and Mediterranean scrub forests.

The sheer rock faces of a former quarry in the area of Su Monte have become a paradise for climbers and hikers. The area is also ideal for horseback riding, canoe trips, and nature photography.

Although the smallest municipality in the province of Sassari, Monteleone offers sports facilities, cozy bed and breakfasts, and an atmosphere of complete peace and tranquility. The charm of its medieval past can still be felt in the narrow streets, the heraldic coats of arms carved into stone, and the historic street names.

The ruins of the Doria Castle are the last remnants of a glorious past, brought to an end in 1436 after a long siege by Aragonese forces. Surviving from that era are the Santo Stefano parish church and the Sant’Antonio Abate rural church.
