Description
Nughedu San Nicolò rises along a fertile valley crossed by the Riu Mulinu stream. Here, unspoiled nature gives way to well-tended orchards, vegetable gardens, and olive groves, while on Monte Pirastru spreads an extensive and valuable wooded area.
Elegant historic manor houses and tall trees frame Piazza Marconi, the heart of the village. The modern San Nicola parish church features a tall bell tower and houses a remarkable mural painted by Aligi Sassu.
The San Sebastiano church preserves an 18th-century wooden altar with three niches containing statues of the Madonna, Christ, and San Sebastiano. Other notable rural sanctuaries include those of Sant’Antonio Abate and San Pietro.
The area is rich in archaeological sites, from the domus de janas of Sa Domo ‘e Pudda and Pianu Edras to the impressive nuragic sanctuary of Cùcuru Mudeju and the Nuraghe Mannu.
Nughedu is also the birthplace of Cicitu Masala, one of the most important writers of 20th-century Sardinian literature.
