Description

Ozieri is the main city of the Logudoro region and the seat of a diocese. Its historic center offers breathtaking views, where cobbled lanes and ancient stairways wind past stately palaces, often topped with distinctive rooftop loggias.

One of its most iconic landmarks is the Fontana Grixoni, located near the Cathedral of the Immacolata, which houses the polyptych of the Madonna di Loreto. Other highlights include the church of San Francesco, part of the Capuchin friary, and the former convent of the Clarisse, now home to the Civic Archaeological Museum, displaying artifacts from all eras.

The Ozieri Culture—a significant Neolithic civilization—was named after this town, with its earliest traces found in the Grotta di San Michele. Also worth visiting is the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art.

The surrounding countryside is dotted with nuraghi such as Mannu and Burghidu, while along the Romanesque routes you'll find Sant’Antioco di Bisarcio church. On the Rio Mannu stands the remarkable Pont’Ezzu, a Roman bridge that showcases ancient engineering.

In Piazza Cantareddu, a monument honors Francesco Ignazio Mannu, author of the famed Sardinian anti-feudal anthem Su patriottu sardu a sos feudatarios.

The Chilivani racecourse and equestrian training center are leading venues for horse breeding and racing. Meanwhile, the San Nicola Fair promotes high-quality cattle farming.

Ozieri also stands out for its local produce—vegetables, flours, pane fino (also known as spianata), excellent cheeses like sa Greviera, and typical sweets such as sospiros and copuletas.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the town was known as a 'little Athens of northern Sardinia,' as it was the birthplace of some of the island's most celebrated poets, renowned for their skill in improvising verses.
