Description

Although the name may suggest a Roman legacy, Romana was, in the Middle Ages, an important stop for pilgrims heading to the cave of San Lussorio. According to tradition, the martyr found refuge here for years during times of persecution. A rural sanctuary now stands atop the cave, where a yearly celebration is held each August.

Along the pilgrimage route, visitors encounter the church of Santu Giolzi and the sanctuary of Santa Maria Ispidale, while in the center of the village stands the Madonna degli Angeli parish church, built in the 16th century.

In the Santu Giagu valley, a complex system of natural caves includes the particularly beautiful Inghiltidolzu cave.

Romana sits on a volcanic plateau rich in mineral sediments—a natural resource that has shaped both the landscape and local history. The welcoming community takes pride in preserving its traditions, especially the art of bread-making, which reflects the flavors and values of rural life. These can be rediscovered in the area’s many agritourism farms.
