Description
Siligo is inseparably linked to iconic Sardinian figures such as singer Maria Carta, writer Gavino Ledda (author of Padre Padrone), and vernacular poet Gavino Contene. It is also one of the places of origin of former President of the Republic Francesco Cossiga and the legendary “witch” Giulia Carta.
Nestled at the foot of Monte Sant’Antonio, which is home to nuragic remains, the village extends around the late Gothic Santa Vittoria parish church. A short distance from the village, the Astronomical Observatory and Planetarium are open to the public on the last Friday of each month.
The basaltic plateaus of Monte Pelau and Monte Santu are perfect for both naturalistic and religious trekking routes. These formations are the result of ancient volcanic activity, just like Monte Ruiu, whose slopes feature a striking volcanic rock formation known as “Su muru ‘e su ferru” (The Iron Wall). Nearby lies the S’Aspru plateau, encircled by nuraghi.
At the summit of Monte Santu stands the rural sanctuary of Sant’Elia, while on the northwestern slopes are the San Vincenzo Ferrer church and the Nostra Signora di Mesu Mundu church, of Byzantine origin. The surrounding archaeological area is rich in remains from the Roman period.
Among local specialties, the most famous is the wild fennel–flavored sausage, a true standout in Sardinian gastronomy.
