Description
Thiesi is the birthplace of the renowned painter Aligi Sassu, to whom a dedicated art museum is devoted. The museum houses a rich collection of original works, including a large mural in the conference hall that pays tribute to the Sardinian revolutionary uprisings of the late 18th century—events in which Thiesi played an active role.
Thanks to its strong entrepreneurial spirit, the village has become a true center of excellence in the dairy industry, with products exported around the globe. Another fast-growing sector is the artisan pasta production, made with high-quality flours.
Near the town hall, visitors can explore an ancient prison tower and several domus de janas in the Rochitas district, where the original village core was founded. In recent years, Rochitas has also lent its name to a popular festival in the style of Cortes Apertas.
The Santa Vittoria parish church, in Catalan Gothic style, is dedicated to the town’s patron saint. However, the most heartfelt celebration is for the Madonna di Seunis, whose churchyard offers a sweeping panoramic view.
The area is rich in natural beauty, with wooded ravines crossed by streams that flow into the Rio Bidighinzu, where eagles often nest.
Among the archaeological gems are the Mandra Antine domus de janas, notable for their polychrome paintings, the corridor-type protonuraghe of Fronte Mola, the Sa Corona cave on Monte Majore, and the megalithic site of Monte Mesu.
