Description

The Burgos Forest is a natural area characterized by large formations of downy oak, holm oak and cork oak, interspersed with prairies. Since ancient times, the area has been the subject of various anthropic activities, and within it are important archaeological sites, such as the nuragic palace of Costa and the Erismanzanu nuraghe.

At the end of the 19th century, the forest became a breeding center, initially managed by a small company and subsequently, in 1906, used by the royal army for the breeding of horses for the police and carabinieri. This led to the birth of a small village, which was abandoned in the '50s after the end of military activity. The horse breeding was then sold to the Istituto di Incremento Ippico di Ozieri, which still manages the activity today.

Today, the Burgos Forest is home to several breeds of horses, including the Anglo-Arab-Sardinian and the Sardinian pony, known as "Giarab", the result of crossbreeding between Giara horses and Arabian stallions. The area also hosts albino donkeys from the island of Asinara, with the aim of preserving this endangered species.

The Burgos Forest is also a starting point for numerous hiking trails that wind through the Goceano forests.
