Description
In the late 12th century and throughout the 13th, a branch of the Doria, a powerful Genoese family, consolidated their dominion in the northwest of Sardinia through matrimonial strategies that allowed control of vast areas of the Giudicato of Torres, including Anglona, part of Meilogu, and the area of Alghero.
In this context, the limestone plateau on which Monteleone Roccadoria stands was fortified, with a wall that protected the village and the castle along the southern slope of the hill, known as Monte Tutar.
Excavations (1998-2004) revealed that the castle was much larger than visible: it included noble residences, warehouses, military accommodation, and an archive.
The original structure, dated to the end of the thirteenth century, was a rectangular building with two rooms, built with blocks of limestone.
In the 14th century, it was incorporated into a new wall 800 meters long, with towers and fortified accesses.
The village was destroyed in 1436 by the Crown of Aragon, marking the end of its medieval history.
