Description
The Ozieri Cathedral, emerged from the restructuring of the previous church of Santa Maria. With the suppression of the dioceses of Castro and Bisarcio in 1503, the Church of Santa Maria di Ozieri became the most important church of the vicariate.
In 1550 it underwent restoration and expansion work, according to the principles of Catalan Gothic style.
In 1803, the diocese of Bisarcio was restored and the seat established in Ozieri. The cathedral was renovated to the designs of architect Gaetano Cima, thus taking on its current neo-classical appearance. At the end of the work, in 1893, the cathedral was consecrated again.
The Neo-Renaissance facade, preceded by Clemente Biondetti's staircase, has stucco decorations rare in Sardinia.
The layout of the church is in three aisles, with lateral chapels, a transept and an apsidal presbytery.
The main altar in white marble is particularly dramatic: it depicts the Madonna with angels attributable to the school of Canova.
