Description

The parish church of Santo Stefano, located in the heart of the village, belongs to the architectural type with two naves and two apses, rare in northern Sardinia but more common in the south of the island.

According to Foiso Fois (1992) and later Roberto Coroneo, it could have been the chapel of the castle, even though there is no documentary evidence. It is more plausible that it was the church of the medieval village.

Its construction dates back to the second half of the XIII century, confirmed by a source from 1272 in which the bishop of Bosa authorizes the Benedictines of San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte to build it.

Built in limestone blocks, it features two naves and two apses that can be traced back to distinct construction phases.

The original layout had a single nave with an apse, which was then extended with a smaller second nave.

The apses differ in decorations and structure: the northern one is more articulated, with arches and carved motifs, while the southern one is simpler.

Coats of arms of the Doria can be seen embedded in some houses of the village.
