Description
In the twenties of the 20th century, a group of veterans from the First World War and emigrants decided to erect a Shrine in honor of San Costantino.
The construction, which lasted from 1920 to 1923, was made possible by the contribution of the entire population, who contributed with labor and money.
The Shrine was consecrated on July 5, 1923, and a plaque commemorates the names of the founders.
The legend tells that the statue of the Saint arrived in Pozzomaggiore on a cart pulled by oxen, and that the location of the Shrine was marked by the gesture of the Saint indicating the chosen place.
The building, designed in Art Nouveau style by Engineer Sale, is located on a hill 457 meters above sea level. The structure features a central nave and side chapels, and is made of local trachyte.
The marble altar is located in the presbytery, where the statues of San Costantino, Sant'Elena, and San Silvestro Papa are kept.
The facade is decorated with elements in limestone and pink trachyte. In 2011, improvement works of the structure were completed.
Around it takes place the namesake Ardia, a horse race during which animals are launched at full speed with great demonstration of skill by the riders.
