Description
The parish church of San Giorgio was built between the fourth and fifth decade of the sixteenth century. The oldest date, 1551, is found on the tombstone of Elena de Leda.
The iconographic model appears to derive from the church of San Francesco di Alghero, with a division of the nave into five rectangular bays with ribbed cross vaults. However, the presbytery, unlike Alghero, is square, typical of the Sardinian-Catalan tradition.
The main chapel features a star-shaped vault with sixteen cordons and five hanging gems.
Inside, you can admire precious wooden altars and some paintings attributed to the schools of Parmigianino, Guercino, and Guido Reni. Noteworthy is the wooden group, a Spanish creation from the 1500s depicting St. George defeating the dragon.
The facade, in sandstone ashlars, is enriched by diagonal buttresses, an elegant portal with half-columns and Gothic ornaments, and a refined interplay of inflected arches.
