Description
Located on a volcanic hill near Borutta, the Cathedral of San Pietro di Sorres is a masterpiece of Pisan-Romanesque architecture, erected between 1171 and the 13th century.
Today, a Benedictine abbey, the church preserves the historical and spiritual memory of a place that, for over three centuries, was an episcopal seat.
Its architectural style reflects the construction phases, with the use of limestone and volcanic stone and a bichromy that alternates light sandstone and dark basalt.
The facade, divided into four levels, features rich decorations and a central window with a cross. Inside, the atmosphere of recollection is created by the light that filters through the windows, illuminating the main altar and the tomb of the blessed Goffredo, founding bishop.
In addition to its historical value, the cathedral houses a Madonna with Child from the 15th century and a Gothic marble pulpit. The church is also home to a museum that tells the history of the Diocese of Sorres and includes an archaeological section related to prehistory and the Roman era.
The Benedictine monastery, built in the 20th century, offers a spiritual welcome for retreats and courses, and each year, on June 29, the town celebrates a solemn procession that connects the village to the cathedral.
