Description
The Basilica of Sant’Antioco di Bisarcio, located on a hill overlooking Ozieri, is one of the most significant examples of Pisan Romanesque architecture in Sardinia.
Known for its imposing architecture and rich decorations, the church served as the cathedral of the Diocese of Bisarcio from 1065 to 1503.
The original complex comprised the church, the bishop's palace, and the parsonage, of which only ruins remain today.
The church's construction took place in three stages: the first cathedral, built in the 11th century, was destroyed by a fire.
The reconstruction began in 1164, under Bishop Giovanni Thelle, with Pisan workers, giving the church a plan with three aisles and an apse oriented east.
In the 13th century, a two-story portico was added, housing the bishop's rooms, including the chapter house and a chapel.
The interior, with columns and arches, is lit by single-lancet windows.
The facade, damaged in the 15th century, was rebuilt without any decorations.
One of the most fascinating features is the "pilgrims' footprints", engravings left by travellers as a sign of their passage.
