Description
The church of San Nicola di Trullas is located in the open countryside on the Campeda plateau, in the territory of Semestene, an area rich in archaeological evidence. Originally, there was a Roman villa, transformed in the medieval era into a Camaldolese monastery, around which a village developed.
The building was constructed before 1113 at the wish of the Athen family and later donated to the Camaldolese monks, who annexed it to their monastery.
Its history is documented in the Condaghe of San Nicola di Trullas (12th-13th century).
Considered one of the most significant examples of Sardinian Romanesque style, the church features a single-nave hall divided into two cross-vaulted spans. The facade, divided horizontally, hosts an architraved doorway with a relieving arch and a series of decorated hanging arches.
The interior preserves precious 13th-century frescoes, depicting scenes from the Apocalypse, restored in 1995.
Every year, in August, the feast of San Nicola is celebrated with a procession and religious and civil festivities.
