Description
The Santo Mountain (Monte Santu), also known as Mount Sant'Elies, is located in Logudoro Meilogu, in north-western Sardinia.
With an altitude of 733 meters above sea level, it is a mesa and a spur of Mount Pelau.
Most of the mountain falls within the territory of Siligo, but some parts belong to the municipalities of Ardara, Bonnanaro, and Mores.
The geologist Giuseppe Pecorini observed that the main topographical emergencies of Meilogu, such as Monte Santo and Monte Pelau, derive from the Quaternary volcanic activity, which has created a fragmented morphology.
On the plain of the mountain stands the church of Saints Elia and Enoch, mentioned in a donation act to the Montecassino abbey of the XI century.
On the slopes, on the side of Mores, is the Crastu de Santu Liseu, an ancient place of Christian worship, probably of the proto-Byzantine era, obtained from a prehistoric hypogeum.
