Description
The necropolis of Mandra Antine, set in an enchanting natural landscape, includes four tombs carved into a rocky outcrop of red trachyte.
Tomb III, known as the "Painted Tomb", is one of the most fascinating burials, with rare pictorial decorations that make it a unique example of subterranean domestic architecture.
Discovered in 1961, the tomb has a "T" plan and features a main cell with a fireplace and a flatband roof. The back wall is decorated with a bull's coat of arms and a series of enigmatic symbols, including black discs and contrasting triangles.
The necropolis dates back to the late Neolithic and the Copper Age (IV-III millennium B.C.), and is located 10 km from Thiesi, in the territory of s'Ozastredu.
The legend tells of a child, Antine, who discovered the tomb and frequented it until his death.
The necropolis is a very rare example of polychrome paintings in prehistoric tombs, testifying to a culture rich in symbolism and mystery.
