Description

The archaeological complex of Nuraghe Appiu is located on the western edge of the Chentu Mannas plateau, which dominates the coastal strip between Capo Marargiu and Capo Caccia.

The nuraghe, situated at 497 m above sea level, is surrounded by a vast village and is located 350 meters NW of a giants' grave, while a single-tower nuraghe (Punta 'e Su Crabile) rises about 100 meters away.

The nuraghe, covered by a massive collapse, was restored in 2012, with interventions aimed at consolidation and revealing the structure. The restoration uncovered a quadrilobate nuraghe with rectilinear curtains and lateral towers linked by "L" shaped ashlars.

A monumental access leads to a covered courtyard, a rare aspect for known nuraghi. From this courtyard six entrances open: one central for the central tower and four others for the lateral towers, as well as long corridors connecting other towers.

The central tower preserves the tholoi of the first two chambers, with niches, a staircase, and a large window, probably for a wooden mezzanine.

In the village, a portion of the eastern sector has emerged, characterized by buildings around a central courtyard. The hut-environments had specific functions, with fireplaces and niches spared in the wall thickness.
