Partulesi Necropolis

Ittireddu

The thirty Domus de Janas witnesses of ancient cults.

Description

The necropolis extends for over one kilometer in the calcareous tuff bed and includes at least a thirty domus de janas, although the original number was higher, as several hypogeums have been destroyed or only fragments remain.

The conformation of the site has led, in some cases, to the creation of short dromoi, corridors dug into the rock.

The tombs have varied planimetric layouts, from simple ones with one or two cells to more complex ones with four rooms arranged longitudinally.

There are also examples of "T" or "varied T" tombs, with additional side rooms.

Some hypogeums show refined architectures, like doors with frames and lintels. In addition, elements related to ritual practices have been found, such as cup marks that probably contained food offerings. The tombs are oriented towards the south, southeast, or southwest, following a ritual custom.

Of particular interest are tombs XIV, XV, and XVI, originally distinct, but then united in a later period. The tomb XIV features a stele carved, with an underworld door, typical of the tombs of giants.
