Description

Located about 6 km from Illorai, Pont’Ezzu extends for 35 meters and is considered one of the best-preserved examples of historical engineering in Sardinia.

Its origin dates back to the Roman era, when it was part of the road Ab Ulbiam-Caralis, but over the centuries it underwent destruction and reconstruction. The final arrangement happened in the Judicial era, when the Pisans rebuilt it with the characteristic "donkey's back" shape to facilitate the crossing of the Tirso River. It was traversed by the "bia de logu", the road that linked the four Judicatures.

The bridge is composed of three pointed arches, with the central one being taller and wider (6.25 meters high and 5.50 meters in diameter).

The scholar Vittorio Angius praised its perfect structure and robustness, also reporting a popular tradition, not confirmed by historical and archaeological evidence, that the construction was desired by Eleonora d’Arborea.
