The vortex of popular legend of geronticide.
Description
The vortex of Mammuscone (Sa ucca 'e Mammuscone) develops in the Plio-Quaternary basaltic rocks, above the limestone rocks.
With a funnel-shaped form and an opening of about 4x6 meters, the cavity is 63 meters deep and extends for 180 meters.
Once considered a volcanic crater, it is linked to popular legends, including that of geronticide. The memory (true or presumed) of this custom still remains: it is in fact common among the locals to use the phrase a Mammuscone ki ti ke ettene (which literally translated means "may they throw you into Mammuscone") as a generic insult.
